Getting Out and About with the Kids Over the School Holidays

School holidays are a time for kids to unwind, relax, and recharge after a busy school term. But for parents, it can sometimes feel like a balancing act—keeping the kids entertained, making the most of the break, and finding activities that are fun for the whole family. Whether you have little ones eager to explore or teens looking for adventure, here’s how you can make the most of the school holidays by getting out and about with your kids. If you are in the Gympie, Hervey Bay or Sunshine Coast areas, then check out TLC’s ideas below…..

Explore Local Parks and Nature Reserves

Sometimes, the best adventures are close to home. Local parks and nature reserves offer endless opportunities for exploration and fun. Whether it’s a simple walk, a scavenger hunt, or a picnic, nature provides a wonderful backdrop for quality family time. Many parks have trails that are suitable for all ages, playgrounds, and even facilities for BBQs or outdoor games. Don’t forget to pack binoculars and a camera to capture the wildlife and natural beauty!

Go Camping—Even if It’s in Your Backyard

Camping doesn’t always have to involve a long drive or a remote location. If you’re looking for a fun and easy way to spend time outdoors, why not try backyard camping? Set up a tent, roast marshmallows, and tell stories under the stars. If you’re feeling more adventurous, pack up and head to a nearby campsite. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or a newbie, the kids will love the novelty of sleeping under the stars.

Enjoy a Relaxing Day at the Beach or Pool

There’s nothing quite like a day by the water to cool off and unwind. Whether you prefer the ocean, a lake, or a local pool, a day of swimming, building sandcastles, and splashing around is always a hit with kids. Bring along some beach toys, a frisbee, and plenty of sunscreen, and you’ve got a recipe for a perfect holiday outing. Don’t forget to pack snacks and drinks to keep everyone energised!

Flow Bouldering, Sunshine Coast

Bouldering is a great activity to do as a family. Regular bouldering promotes physical literacy and teaches children to be resilient and self-reliant. Gyms require that parents supervise their children, so plan on being on the ground when your child is on the wall. You will need to instil gym etiquette and basic safety rules, while also allowing your child the freedom to explore and climb. Flow requires a ratio of 1 adult to 2 children. Flow Gym is a great place for community connection. https://www.facebook.com/FlowBouldering

Conclusion

The school holidays are a wonderful opportunity to bond with your kids, create lasting memories, and discover new places. Whether you’re exploring the great outdoors, attending local events, or simply enjoying time together as a family, there’s no shortage of ways to get out and about with the kids. With a bit of planning and a sense of adventure, you can turn the school holidays into a time of fun, exploration, and connection. So pack up the car, gather the kids, and start making the most of this special time together!
